Warner Bros Found Enough Money In The World For Matt Reeves To Direct The Batman
Back when all of this started, Ben Affleck was supposed to write, direct, and star in The Batman, a standalone Batman film to follow Justice League. However, Affleck spent months commenting about how he wouldn't direct The Batman unless the script was good, and, in a suspicious coincidence, ultimately decided not to direct. Rumors quickly followed that Affleck's script, which had already been rewritten by Chris Terrio, would receive a fresh start when a new director came on board as Affleck pursued an exit strategy from the DCEU. Finally, one report even claimed that multiple insider sources said Affleck wants out of playing Batman completely.
The next director in line for the film was Matt Reeves, but Reeves reportedly dropped out of negotiations, which were described as breaking down, though the cause was unknown. What sticks out about all of this is one of Affleck's many statements about his conditions for doing the film, which was:
As it turns out that there *is* enough money in the world to make a mediocre version of Batman, as Reeves is back on as director, and, according to a report from Deadline, the reason he walked off originally was because Warner Bros "tried to pay him a salary lower than he could have gotten for doing another movie." It appears they've paid up, however, as Reeves is now officially directing the film, and will produce as well.
"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child," Reeves said in a WB press release. "He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen."
Now, the question remains: will the Batman in Matt Reeves' The Batman be The Batfleck, or will someone else take over the role after Justice League?
