X-Men Gold Annual #1 Celebrates 30th Anniversary of Excalibur… But Also Recalls Miracleman
Once upon a time, Alan Moore and Alan Davis were working together on Captain Britain for Marvel Comics and on Marvelman for Warrior Magazine at the same time. They even managed a little unofficial crossover in the process, naming the Captain Britain version of the Marvelman character, Miracleman.
Alan Moore would fall out with Marvel Comics. Alan Davis would fall out with Alan Moore. Davis would go on to work with Chris Claremont on Excalibur, which used many of the characters from Captain Britain. Moore would finish his Miracleman story at Eclipse Comics with other artists.
But the link between the two has always remained.
In today's X-Men Gold Annual #1 by Marc Guggenheim, Leah Williams, Alitha E Martinez, Craig Yeung, Jay David Ramos and Dono Sanchez-Almara – with a cover by Alan Davis that reprises the original Excalibur #1 for its 30th Anniversary, we get a reunion, as Kitty Pryde, Phoenix Rachel Summers Rachel Grey and Nightcrawler travel to meet Captain Britain and Meggan again, as well as their three-month year-old daughter, Maggie.
Would Brian Braddock really name his child after one of the country's most divisive Prime Ministers? Maybe they just like Rod Stewart.
There's no Widget – unless of course, you count Kitty Pryde – but we do get a "Oh Gosh Oh Golly Oh Wow". And no sign of a Warwolf. But we do get to say hello to baby Maggie.
And she gets to say hello back.
And for Meggan, it's a bit too much.
That's where the Marvelman/Miracleman comparison comes in. Because I was rather reminded of the daughter of Michael and Liz Moran, Winter., as drawn by John Totleben.
And how she first appeared.
Looks like the two are still joined…
