American Comics Folk React To… Oprah Winfrey, Harry and Meghan
The interview between Oprah Winfrey, Harry Windsor and Meghan Markle aired on US television last night, and has been all over the UK media today as well. But British comic book folk don't seem to be talking that much about it. Instead, it's been left to the Americans – who to be fair, have been funding the Royal Family through tourism for a century, so they are even more invested.
Meghan says she grew up in LA seeing celebrities all the time and didn't really understand the difference between celebrities and royals.
Ooh honey. Oh noooo.

Watching the story on the unprecedented poverty struggle on tonight's @60Minutes puts the perspective on this Meghan & Harry stuff. They weren't denied by shelters due to overcapacity and they weren't a family living in a car. Sorry it's a very real contrast.

I have less than zero interest in the royal family and even I'm finding this interview absolutely gripping. It's surprisingly powerful. Damn, Oprah.

Oprah is asking her for deets about the Kate thing. Meghan is saying that's not cool because Kate apologized. Meghan didn't respond because she didn't want to throw Kate under the bus. She wouldn't defend herself. The palace wouldn't defend her either even tho they knew better.

Watching the royals.

THERE WERE CONCERNS ABOUT ARCHIE'S SKIN TONE.
About how dark he might be.

I mean he's probably dead right?

They didn't take the official photo with the new baby because the baby was unprotected. The tabloids ate that up. Saying they were breaking with tradition. But they were just worried for his safety.
Oprah asking outright: was it about Archie's race?

A thing England could do is just not have a royal family. They very much could do that

She was aware enough to know these thoughts were unlike her.
Talking about this photo she was sent of an event she did with Harry. She went because she couldn't be left alone after telling him the night before she was suicidal. And had asked for help that morning.

.@Marvel needs to rush one more episode of #WandaVision that's just them being interviewed by Oprah.

A summer baby. They are done having kids tho.
CA is their home now. :)
Security was cut off when they relocated to Canada.
When they came to LA they crashed with Tyler Perry for 3 months.
Now they live in Santa Barbara.

This entire interview came off as tremendously tone deaf given the catastrophic suffering and death experienced around the world this past year.

This boy was reliving his childhood trauma, made worse because his wife is black. He begged the powers that be for help. Got NOTHING.
He's discussing challenging his own privilege. And how quick an education he got about racism watching the UK press etc come for his wife.

Harry and Meghan go out of their way to exonerate the Queen several times, so by process of elimination it's obvious who the family villains are in their eyes. But it's weird that the Queen is apparently powerless to help them. That seems unlikely.

Harry stepped up to protect his family. Sounds like Charles didn't like it.
Good lord.
Commercials again.

To think I spent 2 seasons feeling bad for Prince Chuckles.

He also says he knows the family's fear of the tabloids. There is an unspoken contract between the royal family and the press. Let us in and we won't demolish you. A symbiosis.
— Tess Fowler (@TessFowler) March 8, 2021
I wonder if Prince Harry knows most people stop getting money from their family at like age 18.

He says he didn't realize he was trapped until he met Meghan. Trapped within the system. He says his father and brother are trapped too.
— Tess Fowler (@TessFowler) March 8, 2021
Wow.
Meghan Markle came to play 😎💅And congrats on Meghan & Harry's baby girl! #HarryandMeghanonOprah https://t.co/8OEOeTinjg

Harry feels let down because Charles knows what this is like, Archie is his grandson. But a lot of hurt has happened.
Harry wants to work it out with his dad.
But he hella just called his family ignorant. Lol
— Tess Fowler (@TessFowler) March 8, 2021
Never paid attention to "the royals" in general, though Markle has always seemed kind and smart, and I suppose I'm glad Harry has worked to live down that Halloween costume…
But THIS? This is a higher level rhetorical and political flex. Bravo, Duchess. Standing O. https://t.co/BCFWeabLqW

Whenever anyone leaves the house Archie says: drive safe. Lol
His relationship with William is "space" right now. And time heals all wounds.
He is proud of him and Meghan.
Meghan's regret is believing them when they said they would protect her.
WOW.
— Tess Fowler (@TessFowler) March 8, 2021
My favorite Meghan/Harry scandal was when they released a video telling people to register to vote & the media called it an implicit endorsement of Biden, which, I mean, what the hell was going on last year, media?
— Tom Brennan (@Brennanator) March 8, 2021
Meghan says: he saved all of us. He made a decision that saved MY life. He saved all of us.
— Tess Fowler (@TessFowler) March 8, 2021
Sounds like a Prince Phillip classic to me
— Andy Khouri (@andykhouri) March 8, 2021
And for the British? Well, there's this one…
I see everyone is vastly overstating the importance and relevance of the British Royal Family today. Americans, please be aware that we, British people, 1) already know that they're load of racist old horrors and 2) are not attached to them in any way.
— John Reppion (@johnreppion) March 8, 2021
Says a lot.
