A Cat Saves The Day: Locke and Key Small World

A Cat Saves The Day: Locke and Key Small World

Ahh dollhouses. A fun past time for children of all ages. Sometimes they can be a little creepy though. In the world of Locke and Key Small World, a dollhouse in this case directly represents the house the Locke family lives in, which can only mean trouble.

Storytellers Gabriel Rodriguez and Joe Hill craft an easy to follow tale focusing on Jean and Mary, sisters in the Locke Family. When Mary receives a dollhouse for her birthday she's over the moon. She is instructed that as a young lady she should learn how to properly manage a household.

Locke & Key - Small World Panel 0

Her much younger sister Jean also wants to play with said house, but in typical sibling fashion Mary isn't really keen on sharing just yet. Of course sisters will be sisters and Jean disregards Mary. It's then up to all of the siblings to come together to save the day, showing that family is indeed the strongest bond out there.

I wish the story was a little longer, but I understand it's just a one shot. The delux edition is a real treat to have since it goes into detail on the production of this story. The art work in the book is fantastic. When the giant spider attacks the family you could always feel the tension. When it reveals itself I was scared for the kids as well.

Most of us are weary around spiders in general, and I can't imagine being faced to face with a giant one. Rodriguez is a master at detail in each character. You don't even need dialogue to know what's going on in the panels. I also just enjoy how he drew the cat as it ran away.

Hopefully there will be more of Locke and Key in our future, but for now I guess I should find back issues of the series!
