DC and Marvel Much Closer on Marketshare-Per Capita in July 2019

Welcome to Bleeding Cool's Monthly 'Per Capita' List.  The usual comics industry marketshare shows how much share of the overall market a comics publisher has. This divides it by the number of new titles they publish in that month.

We've already looked at publisher marketshare in the North American direct market of comic book shops for July 2019.

But if you divide the marketshare by the number of individual titles published that month, you get a different picture. In July, Marvel published 150 comics, graphic novels to DC Comics' 97 (when you take away the double cardstock figures) and Image Comics' 60.

It looks a little closer.

In January, Marvel still beat DC on both counts, in February, DC had a greater retailer marketshare per item distributed than Marvel, though brought in less revenue and in March, DC Comics dominated both, more in sales than revenue. In April, Marvel swung this round again, leading DC over marketshare per capita both in dollars raised and items sold. But in May, DC swung that around, taking a dramatic lead in both. Which they partially maintained in June. But now that gap has been tightened, with DC only just taking the DC retail-per capita lead but Marvel more comfortably taking the dollars-per-capita. On average that means a retailer sells slightly more copies of DC titles than Marvel. But makes more money from Marvel.

IDW falls to eleventh place.

Dynamite, Albatross Funnybooks and Fantagraphics massively overperform due to not selling that many books but all of them doing well.

Dynamite remained in fourth place, followed by Albatross Funnybooks. Indeed, with Dark Horse, Fantagraphics, Oni and Boom, and even Viz Media outperforming IDW, which published more titles than Image but each one sold far less, on average, closer to how Ahoy Comics' titles perform.
