Folklords #1 Gets a Fourth Printing, Folklords #2 Gets a Third, as Folklords #3 is Published Tomorrow
We told you first that Boom Studios plans to send every issue of James Tynion IV & Werther Dell'Edera's Something is Killing The Children and Doctor Kieron Gillen & Dan Mora's Once & Future back to print after sell outs over the holiday break.
The momentum from Boom's top two creator-owned series has been driving readers into comic shops issue after issue from 2019 into this New Year, but it doesn't seem to stop with just their two biggest hits, even if Erik Larsen and Image Comics publicly disagree.
I understand that both issues of Matt Kindt & Matt Smith's Folklords have seen sell-outs across the board and retailers should expect new printings to be announced soon.
That means we'll get a 4th printing of Folklords #1, along with a 3rd printing of Folklords #2 and I would also expect Boom to rush a 2nd printing of the Folklords #3, which hits stores tomorrow.
As Boom gets all their top books back in comic shops to keep up with their recent readership, uh, boom, it'll be interesting to see how their rivals at Image Comics react in their creator-owned comics war for the hearts and minds and print runs of comics readers and retailers.
We've seen big creators associated with Image like Brian Azzarello, Kieron Gillen, Jeremy Haun, Danny Luckert, W. Maxwell Prince create new work at Boom over the last year – so will Image make a play for Boom's top talent? Or will Image announce new printings for Undiscovered Country or Killadelphia to get the spotlight back from Boom?
Or maybe they'll just publish Jonathan Hickman and Mike Hawthorne 's Decorum and let that speak for itself.
Either way, the next two months will tell us a lot about the game of one-upmanship between Boom and Image that readers seem to be embracing. February brings Boom's first major launch of the year in the buzzed about Alienated by Si Spurrier & Christian Wildgoose. Perhaps we'll get a better sense of what each has in store for 2020 at February's ComicsPRO Annual Meeting? Talking of which… anyone going?
