Ghost Rider Decision Overturned – Gary Friedrich Vs Marvel Comics Could Go To Trial
The Hollywood Reporter has the latest on the legal situation between Ghost Rioder co-creator Gary Friedrich and publisher Marvel Comics over the ownership of the flame haired supernatural biker.
When last we heard, the court had found against Friedrich, and even that he owed Marvel Comics thousand of dollars for use of the Ghost Rider name at comic conventions. It was stated he wouldn't even be able to advertise himself as the co-creator of Ghost Rider.
Now the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has overthrown that ruling, and is saying that the contracts that Friedrich signed are ambiguous and that it should go to a full trial to decide whether Friedrich has an ownership stake in Ghost Rider or not.
The question is whether Marvel will risk such a trial, given the existence of two major movies, toys and considerable licensing, or decide to settle.
Either way, I don't see Friedrich having to pay that $17,000 back any time soon.
