Marvel Announces Avengers and Spider-Man Spinoffs for A4: Empyre with a Y

A lot of comic book fans have been saying, "I'm interested in this Empyre with a Y super-mega-crossover event Marvel is talking about, but I'm worried there won't be enough spinoffs and tie-ins to eat up my entire monthly comic book budget while it's going on." Well, fear not, true believers, because Marvel has heard your complaints and responded by announcing another tie-in and a new spinoff series spinning out of April's super-mega-crossover event.

First up, A4: Empyre with a Y: Avengers #1, by Jim Zub and Carlos Magno, with a cover by Steve McNiven, taking place in The Savage Land. On Marvel.com, Zub elaborated on the spinoff:

Empyre is all about an intergalactic threat targeting Earth, battling our heroes on multiple fronts, putting them on the defensive while the world hangs in the balance. EMPYRE: AVENGERS showcases three important conflicts with an eclectic group of Avengers, some who we haven't seen as part of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in quite a while. Some of these Avengers are ones I've written in the past (on UNCANNY AVENGERS or AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER) while others are characters I've been itching to write for years.

I don't want to tip my hand too much, but I can also say that the Savage Land is one of the main locations for this tie-in and that brings Ka-Zar and Shanna the She-Devil into the mix as well. Jungle action, heroic reunions, and big surprises. That's what EMPYRE: AVENGERS is all about.

For the second spinoff, Marvel decided to set aside the need to squeeze as many dollars out of an overextended readership for a moment and focus on giving a character who doesn't often get a chance to shine a shot. Just kidding, it's a Spider-Man book. In an access journalism EX-X-XCLUSIVE on AV Club (you don't win an Eisner without having a too-cozy relationship with comic book publishers, after all), writer Taran Killam chose not to reveal any details about the series and rather to spend several paragraphs kissing Marvel's ass for allowing him to use his celebrity status to step over all the comic book creators who have been toiling in the trenches for years and immediately land a Spider-Man book after writing a single issue of Spider-Verse. Diego Orlotegui will handle art with and covers by Humberto Ramos and Edgar Delgado, and, ripping off J.J. Abrams' kid, A4: Empyre with a Y: Spider-Man will introduce a new Spider-Man villain.

No length was given for A4: Empyre with a Y: Avengers but A4: Empyre with a Y: Spider-Man will run for three issues. Check out the covers to both books below.

A prophecy once said that in the comic book industry's darkest days, a hero would come to lead the people through a plague of overpriced floppies, incentive variant covers, #1 issue reboots, and super-mega-crossover events. Sadly, that prophecy was wrong. Oh, Jude Terror was right. For ten years. About everything. But nobody listened. And so, Jude Terror has moved on to a more important mission: turning Bleeding Cool into a pro wrestling dirt sheet!
