Merriam-Webster Adds "Embiggen" to Dictionary, References Ms. Marvel
The word nerds at Merriam-Webster are at it again, adding more words to the dictionary. Today's batch of new words includes "embiggen," whose definition is officially: "to make bigger or more expansive." But in a special treat for comic book fans, Merriam-Webster announced the word on Twitter using a gif featuring Ms. Marvel, whose superpowers allow her to embiggen parts of her own body.
Now, if only our spell-check* would get with the times and stop putting a little red line underneath "embiggen."
Ms. Marvel, co-created by Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona, first appeared in Captain Marvel #14 in 2013, and she soon became Marvel's first Muslim character with her own solo comic book. Now, just a few short years later, she's helping to introduce a new word to the official English lexicon. Amanat reacted on Twitter:
Indeed.
*Yes, Bleeding Cool writers occasionally use spell-check.
