A New Guido Fawkes For A New Generation – Designs Wanted

I write and draw cartoons every week for the British right wing libertarian political blog, Guido Fawkes, the most popular political blog in the country. Run by Paul Staines, it models itself on he famous British terrorist as "the only man to enter Parliament with honest intentions" and does it's best to bring down any politician who sows an ounce or moral turpitude.

Of course while it is now enjoying the fruits of its labour, in the early days when it was designed, it was run n a wing and a prayer. And now they are looking for a new look for their iconic logo of Guy.

The Guido Fawkes Blog avatar is widely recognised and seen by readers millions of times every month, he is a cheeky chappy with a big mischievous smile. After 10 years use by the blog it is time he was updated. Confusingly he is based on Errol Flynn's portrayal of Robin Hood – or at least the poster version of him:

The avatar has in the past been animated using facial modeling software that synced with a voice-track for Guy News online videos

As we approach the general election we will be doing that again.

We also want Guido to have some alter-egos. We have tried to make our own home made avatar (pictured right), as you can see we're bloggers not graphic designers.

So the brief is to produce a base classic Guido – losing Robin Hood's feather in the cap – with the fetching moustache in place and reworked for the digital age. Don't lose the sparkle in his eye, the handsome cheeky grin or the colouring and keep Errol Flynn's face at the front of your mind. We're open to thoughts on what will make him flexible to animate and re-costume. Obviously Photoshop is not the only tool in the box.

The other Guido alter egos to be designed include Media Guido (news man), Tech Guido (think Terminator), Policy Guido (propellor head wonk), Doctor Guido (medic), Energy Guido (think J R Ewing or something more imaginative) , Guy O'Fawkes (think Irish), City Guido (bowler hat), Guido Forks (restaurant reviewer) – you get the idea.

We like Gorillaz by the way…

The new avatars will be seen millions of times every month, the cheeky chappy grin, humour and friendliness of the image is a part of the success of the blog. We want a clean, cool modernisation that is an evolutionary change rather than a jarring revolution. We have high expectations.

We expect to pay a commercially minded artist for their work.
