Cages At The Printers – Dave McKean's Masterpiece Back In Print
I believe that Dave McKean's Cages is one of the greatest contributions to the comic book medium. But it's been a long and hard struggle.
Originally published by Tundra, legend goes as it began to become semi-successful it caused a problem as Tundra worked out that it was impossible to make money on each issue – and as sales rose, so did losses.
The collection from Kitchen Sink Press, complete with Terry Gilliam cover quote, was heavy enough to cause my wife back pain when she bought it from Gosh! Comics as a birthday present.
A four hundred and ninety-six page twisted tale that dives through architecture, jazz, writing, storytelling, art, cats, the art of living together and the machinations of the very gods themselves, and a recognition, not necessarily negatively, of the cages we build or are built for us. I find it life-affirming, challenging and, well, heavy. Never a year goes by without an evening, a glass or two of red wine, and my copy of Cages. But it's been out of print for way too long.
Dave McKean has just tweeted;
Cages PB is at the printers finally! So glad to get this book back into print in a lovely digitally remastered version, thanks to Dark Horse.
It should be out in September with the new cover shown. I'm probably not buying it for the third time. But if you haven't, soon you will have your opportunity to enter comic book heaven. $29.99. Six cents a page.
