Reading Too Much Into Paul Cornell Being Tapped For Action Comics

His Hugo-nominated series for Marvel was cancelled – before it got the Hugo nom, but still.

And now Paul Cornell has been snapped by by DC, and is writing Action Comics instead of previously-announced Marc Guggenheim.

The Source reports this in one of those manners that just reeks of spin. It may be 100% accurate, but it doesn't feel accurate. Matt Idelson is quoted as saying;

The story he pitched began to evolve into something quite different, something Marc knew would be great, but he had concerns about whether he was the man to write this tale. Rather than do a disservice to the book, the readers and himself, Marc decided to step away from ACTION, and we both know that sometime in the future, we'll be collaborating on Superman for sure.

It just sounds wrong, doesn't it? Especially when followed by such hyperbole as

With Guggs out of the picture, there was only one person to turn to, one writer who could bring this book to those Guggian heights while still making it his own—Paul Cornell. Shockingly, he accepted the challenge.

Such clearly overblown nonsense makes the previous paragraph feel just as dubious.

Whatever happened to the sober, calm announcement? Does everything have to be delivered by Eddie Izzard?

Congratulations, Paul. Any chance you could bring Superman to Oxfordshire?
