Saturday Runaround – Kick Ass's Ass Kicked
KickAssWatch: Nikki Finke is reporting poor Kick-Ass box office results. You know, for a film that opens at number one. The studio wanted $30 million opening weekend. Industry experts had predicted $25 million. My tracking analysis suggested for $22 million. Nikki Finke reports expected takings of $19 million.
1. Kick-Ass (Lionsgate) NEW [3,065 Theaters]
Friday $7.5M, Estimated Weekend $19MSo far, this anti-hero pic may not even break $20M by Sunday's end. Whereas Hollywood had been expecting $30+M. Ouch! "Kick-Ass never took hold the way many of us thought it would," one rival studio exec tells me. Estimates for Friday range from a low of $6.5M to a high of $8M. Now Lionsgate, which paid $25M for this U.S. acquisition, has another disappointment.
I maintain that this is a film that can benefit longterm from good word-of-mouth that I've seen first-hand with the movie, but the backlash is beginning.

TurfWatch: Before he flew back for the Forbidden Planet signing, Jonathan Ross made sure Stephen Fry got to see a copy of his new comic, Turf, in Los Angeles. Say, with Matthew Vaughn talking about making a Turf movie, who would you like to see Stephen play?

I have no information about how the Israeli army reacts to my books, though on one reporting trip I was invited to spend time with Israeli soldiers on the Egyptian border, opposite the town of Rafah. They had found out I was looking at things from the Palestinian side and graciously offered to show me their perspective.
