Will You Get Your Toys And Big Books For Christmas?
Industrial action at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach was tentatively settled earlier this week after an eight-day strike over outsourcing of labour and lack of contracts. The ports were shut down after workers refused to cross a picket line.
But one of the issues that might affect the comics industry this Christmas is the arrival of toys, statues and comics that have their production outsourced to East Asia and shipped in, especially the kind of high price items that are popular this time of year.
Many shipments were diverted to Northern California, Mexico and Panama, but others have been queuing up and are now entering the port. This was too late to affect most big retailers' Christmas plans, but comics and comic-related product is often a little more time sensitive.
But the possibility has been raised that this is a prelude to similar contractual negotiations set for 2014.
