Is The Walking Dead #189 Retelling the Story of the Ceaușescus? (Spoilers)
Who fancies a history recap? No, not of the Walking Dead but the Ceaușescu family of Romania?
Nicolae Ceaușescu was the general secretary of the Romanian Communist Party from 1965 to 1989 and was the country's head of state from 1967, serving as President of the State Council and from 1974 concurrently as President of the Republic until his overthrow in the Romanian Revolution in December 1989, part of a series of anti-Communist and anti-Soviet Union uprisings in Eastern Europe that year.
He had a large family, several members of which wielded influence in Communist Romania, and who were arrested along with him and his wife. One son Nicu was on the Executive Committee of the Romanian Communist Party. Another son, Valentin, managed the Steaua București football club, and their daughter Zola, a mathematician was arrested after the revolution for undermining the Romanian economy.
And reading the new Walking Dead, it all came back. As, in the face of revolution, Rick Grimes seems to want to rescue the Ceaușescus…
How did it end for the Ceaușescus? Well, after being tried and convicted of economic sabotage and genocide, they were immediately executed by firing squad on Christmas Day 1989 and Ceaușescu was succeeded as President by Ion Iliescu, who had played a major part in the revolution. Capital punishment was abolished shortly thereafter.
Could the Walking Dead be repeating history with the Milton family of the Commonwealth? Or do they have a powerful family closer to home in mind?
