X-ual Healing – Old Man Logan #44 is Fine, but Can Marvel Interest You in a Bullseye: The Columbian Connection TPB?

Sworn to sell comics for Marvel executives who feared and hated the fact that Fox owned their movie rights, The Uncanny X-Men suffered great indignities, but with a corporate merger on the way, the X-Men can finally get back to doing what they do best: being objectively the best franchise in all of comics.

Each week, armed with the joy, heartbreak, and frustration of 30+ years of reading X-Men comics, we crankily read every new X-book that comes out, recap the events, react to them, maybe provide some links to Marvel Unlimited for further reference. No smart, fancy words about the creative process. Go read a review for that, you… intellXual!

It's the way X-Men comics were meant to be read! It's the column that can only be known as…

What the Hell Happened?!

In Newark, New Jersey, rather than enjoying some of the fine local Portuguese cuisine, Bullseye has kidnapped the mercenary hitman Bullet and is threatening to kill his son if Bullet doesn't cooperate. Bullseye wants answers, but apparently, he doesn't see the caption boxes telling him to read Bullseye: The Columbian Connection TPB, so instead, he makes Bullet recap the events for him. He wants to know what Vendetta's problem is (she wants to kill him for killing her husband) and also where Bullet's partner, Shotgun is. Bullseye is going to kill Bullet either way, but it's up to Bullet whether his partner or son live.

At Vendetta's apartment, Logan and Vendetta recap the situation with Bullseye. He feels emasculated by losing to Logan a few issues back, and now he's killing everyone who's ever crossed him to get his mojo back. Neither Vendetta nor Logan have any leads on where Bullseye might be, but Vendetta does happen to conveniently know Bullet and Shotgun from the frequently plugged Bullseye: The Columbian Connection TPB, so they decide to go check that out.

Meanwhile, in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Shotgun and some associates are in a yellow muscle car, unable to contact Bullet, who they're due to meet up with. Back in Newark, Bullet breaks free and reaches for his phone, but Logan and Vendetta arrive. Vendetta removes her helmet and Bullet attacks her, blaming her for what's going on. After he calms down, he agrees to help only if someone rescues his son. Logan calls Glob Herman and asks him to take care of it.

In Bridgewater, Bullseye is waiting for Bullet and his crew as they arrive to rob a bank. He kills the cannon fodder and wants answers about Vendetta from Shotgun when Logan and Vendetta arrive. A fight ensues. The cops show up. Bullseye escapes, killing a cop and stealing a police car. Logan, Vendetta, and Bullet hop in Bullet's getaway car and give chase.

At St. Aquinas Middle School in New York, Glob Herman finds out that Bullseye came to the school before he even went after Bullet and kidnapped his kid already. Well, that was smart thinking on his part.

The Bottom Line

After months of us predicting it here in this column, as soon as we learned that the original Wolverine would be returning, we finally learned in the Marvel solicits this week that Old Man Logan is ending. Old Man Logan is the Marvel Universe's fifth-best Wolverine, behind Li'l Wolvie, the Wolverine from Exiles, Jonathan, the actual Wolverine, X-23, and Honey Badger, and since Albert doesn't have his own solo ongoing, that means Old Man Logan is the necessary casualty here. It's nothing personal. Just math.

Even still, we'll kind of miss the old bastard. Thankfully, there's another five six issues to go.

Further Reading

Has anyone mentioned Bullseye: The Columbian Connection TPB? We're getting the idea you should probably read that, based on how often it's been referenced in this storyline. The good news is that Bullseye: The Columbian Connection TPB is actually just a fancy name for the 2017 Bullseye series that you can read on Marvel Unlimited.
