Will We Be Getting A Mortal Kombat – Street Fighter Crossover?
Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm studios, has had a rather busy month with all of those Injustice 2 reveals but he's not forgotten about his other major project Mortal Kombat. Yesterday Boon teased that we just might get a Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter crossover. Old school arcade fans might be able to finally play the two mainstay franchises in the same game. Would be pretty awesome, if we ever get it.
To be fair, Boon only said he'd "have to entertain" an offer if Capcom ever approached him about a crossover. So, its all relatively unlikely. His comments have come to us thanks to the IGN Unfliltered interview show. "There's part of me that's like 'That would be such a cool dream,' and then there's another part of me that goes, 'There's no way would that satisfy everyobdy,'" Boon told IGN.
He tempered his obvious enthusiasm with the basic facts. Even if the game was rated M and players could "tear Ryu's head off" it would be difficult to make a successful crossover because of the differences in gameplay between the two series. "There's different pacing, there's different fundamentals with both of them," Boon said. He then pointed to the Street Fighter x Tekken crossover as an example. With two vastly different fighting games, one franchise would have to take a hit. To be honest I wonder if some of that isn't just pessimism on Boon's behalf, trying to talk fans out of wanting a game he knows will never be made. It's extremely unlikely Capcom would approach NetherRealm for it, and I have my doubts as to whether NetherRealm would be able to make a faithful Street Fighter game. Injustice does just play like a DC skinned Mortal Kombat, after all.
He did say that he'd have to entertain an offer from Capcom and would likely "do a whole ton of research" to see what Street Fighter players would want from a Street Fighter game. So there is that, still. I'm a whole lot of skeptical about it, really. To be fair, I'd be skeptical even if you sat the game down in front of me and let me play it.
