Peyton Reed Talks Cassie Lang and Her Superhero Future

Anyone who has read the Ant-Man comics knows that being a superhero doesn't stop with Scott in the Lang family. His daughter Cassie, when she gets older, takes up various mantles, including Ant-Girl and Giant-Girl. The Cassie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by Abby Ryder Fortson, is far too young to take on the hero mantle, but she very much looks up to her dad the superhero. Director Peyton Reed talked to ComicBook.com about setting up Cassie's possible future in the MCU.

"Abby is fantastic," Reed said. "She was six when we shot the first one, and nine when we shot this one, and just to kind of see how she's grown in those three years… She's such a sharp kid, and so focused, but still maintains her little-kid-ness. She's very natural. And the rapport between Paul [Rudd] and Abby is terrific, and I'm glad we were able to really capture that. She's terrific, and I think it was fun story-wise to, yes, start maybe planning seeds for the idea that the first time we see them together in the movie, and he's kind of built this whole cardboard maze to show her, okay, I can't responsively shrink you down, but this is what it's like to shrink. This is kind of what it's like, and she's intrigued, and says, 'Oh, I wish we could do it for real.' So there's a real curiosity about her dad, and what he does."

The bond between Scott and Cassie is perfectly portrayed by Fortson and Paul Rudd. Their relationship is even cuter now that Cassie knows about her dad and that her mom, dad, and stepfather are all getting along. Reed really enjoyed panting the seeds for Cassie's heroism in the movie.

"It was fun kind of planting the seeds, and seeing the spirit of Scott Lang starting to rear its head in his daughter," Reed said. "That was intriguing to us, and I think Abby's just really terrific."

Fortson is young enough that if she wanted to tackle the Young Avengers when she hit her teens she'd be more than capable. It would be really cool to see a hero grow before our eyes in the same way we watched the kids of Harry Potter grow into being heroes too.

Summary: As Scott Lang balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.
