Tenet: Kenneth Branagh Tries to Make Sense of His Role in Film

When it comes to one of cinema's greatest minds and enigmas, it's Christopher Nolan. The director is known for his cerebral and existential nature that constantly challenges the perception of his characters and the audience. According to some of the stars like Robert Pattinson and Kenneth Branagh, they're still trying to comprehend elements of the film even as active participants. The Shakespearean actor-director spoke to Total Film (H/T via SyFy) to clarify if he's the antagonist in Nolan's latest film Tenet. "Given the nature of it, as Chris to some extent sort of reinvents the wheel here," he said. "A lot of people start engaging with John David Washington's character in both expected ways … so you might expect me to be an antagonist … but then [the story] doesn't quite follow what you might expect as the story plays out." The film appears to play out like a spy thriller, but Nolan's known for his elaborate twists and turns in most of his movies, as evidenced in Momento (2000), Inception (2010), and The Prestige (2006).

Branagh Attempts to Explain His Role in Tenet

Branagh remains baffled by Tenet's script. "I kid you not," he said. "I read this screenplay more times than I have ever read any other thing I have ever worked on. It was like doing the Times crossword puzzle every day, I would imagine. Except the film and the screenplay didn't expect you, or need you, to be an expert. In the playing of it, and in the scenes, he keeps up turning, or playing forward and backward, our expectations of what the character should be. So my conversations with [Nolan] about my character were constant because the character's evolution was not set. It was a series of constant surprises." Tenet also stars Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine, Himesh Patel, Aaron Taylor-Johnston, and Clémence Poésy. The Warner Bros film is slated to hit theaters on July 17th.
