Mr Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite Are Guardian Angels? Justice League #19 Spills the Beans

Mr Mxyzptlk was created by Jerry Siegel and Ira Yarborough as a mischievous imp from the fifth dimension in 1944, trying to trick Superman in a cartoonish way. He was reintepreted as an immortal being trying to pass the time and giving evil a go, forcing Superman to kill him and retire from the superheroic business in Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow. In years t,o come he would be reinterpreted as an omnipotent being playing with comic book characters for is own entertainment, to teach Superman not to be so serious, a mad wizard who would be king, and an imprisoned subject of Dr Manhattan/Mister Oz/Jor-El to stop him messing with Superman.

But it seems that, along with similarly-themed Bat-Mite, they have had a plan all along. And preparing Superman for just this eventuality, as going up against the Sixth Dimension.

And the Guardian Angels of both Superman and Batman. And apparently, always have been…
