Showtime Renews 'The Circus' to Cover Midterm Elections

The Showtime political documentary series The Circus has been renewed for a third season. The future of the series was a bit in doubt after one of the show's three hosts was fired. Mark Halperin was fired by Showtime in the wake of sexual harassment allegations. Alex Wagner of CBS News and the Atlantic will be taking Halperin's place alongside current hosts John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon.

Showtime Networks president David Nevins said in a statement:

The Circus has established itself as a primary source of insightful, comprehensive analysis during major political events. In these pivotal and turbulent times, we're so thrilled to have Alex Wagner joining John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon to provide access and context to the personalities and events behind the week's news.

The series will debut April 15th and will chronicle the stories behind the headlines and focus on the behind-the-scenes drama in Washington and around the country as we head towards what might be a game-changing midterm election. The series debuted in January of 2016 and produced 26 episodes following the biggest weeks in the run up to the 2016 Presidential Election. A second, eight-episode season started in March of 2017. No word on exactly how many episodes the new season will be.
