Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd Series The Shrink Next Door Goes Apple TV+
Anchorman stars Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd will be taking their limited series adaptation of Wondery and Bloomberg's 2019 podcast The Shrink Next Door with them to Apple TV+, with the streaming service giving a straight-to-series order for the eight-episode limited series from MRC Television. Directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and written by Georgia Pritchett (Veep), The Shrink Next Door is a dark comedy based on true events that follows the bizarre relationship between "psychiatrist to the stars" Dr. Isaac "Ike" Herschkopf (Rudd), and his longtime patient Martin "Marty" Markowitz (Ferrell). Over the course of their relationship, the all-too-charming Ike slowly takes over Marty's life, even moving into Marty's home and taking over his family business. The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an unprecedentedly exploitative one filled with manipulation, power grabs, and dysfunction at its finest.
Gloria Sanchez Productions has Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Brittney Segal serving as executive producers. Rudd and Pritchett will also executive produce, as do Showalter and Jordana Mollick via Semi-Formal Productions. Additional executive producers include Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy for Wondery and Jared Sandberg, Katie Boyce, and Francesca Levy for Bloomberg Media, with Joe Nocera a co-executive producer. The limited series is a Civic Center Media project, in association with MRC Television.
Veteran journalist Joe Nocera had a Hamptons neighbor: Ike, therapist to celebrities and Manhattan's elite. He had star-studded parties at the vacation house. But one summer, Joe came back to discover that Ike was gone, and the summer house next door had never belonged to Ike in the first place. It was Marty's, a therapy patient of Ike's who had finally broken free from Ike's psychological domination. THE SHRINK NEXT DOOR is the story of one therapist's psychological manipulation as he crossed lines and defrauded his patients — and he's still out there. In partnership with Bloomberg.
