Pay And Credit For Colourists – Marvel And DC

Nathan Fairbairn, colourist on titles such as Batman Inc, Scott Pilgrim and Swamp Thing, has been talking about credit and royalties.

The situation is still bizarre in a world where colourists are becoming increasingly skilled, using a mixture of both traditional and computer aided art styles, it seems like the companies who hire them don't really respect their contributions, something Swamp Thing artist, Yanick Paquette, is passionate about changing:

I asked DC Comics if they had any response to this issue, but received no reply. However minutes afterwards, their Exec VP Publicity Alex Segura started following Paul Lightfoot on Twitter..

It's worth remembering that Marvel don't actually give royalties, but "incentive payments" which aren't quite as clear cut, and which don't apply for foreign publication, as Bryan Hitch is wont to point out when asked to sign the rather gorgeous mini-hardcovers of his work from Hachette UK.

But for colourists, USA-only incentive payments are better than no royalties at all.
