Lobo Gets A Brazilian

A number of people have expressed problems with the new design of Lobo. Writer Margurite Bennett went online to defend the designs. But no one has expressed quite as much concern, anger and barely repressed homophobia as the Brazilians. Actually, not repressed at all in some cases.

Lobo is a very popular character in Brazil, indeed it's been argued that DC could have continued publication of his comic on Brazilian sales alone. However, the version they prefer is the Simon Bisley design.

The news of the redesign made the national papers. The boards responded:

There certainly did seem to be a theme. When these kind of comments were criticised (and it did happen once on the thread), there was this rather interesting defence….

Those who have read comics with Lobo already know that the stories are funny EXACTLY because he is a stereotypical dumb big, strong , indestructible , violent and fully amoral. He is a cartoonish representation of the Hell's Angels , politically incorrect, sexist, chauvinistic and yes, homophobic.

Not sure how that would stand up in court. Not that American message boards were less insulting of course, but at least they (mostly) had the decency to hide their homophobia.

Anyway, let's see what happens on publication.
