Heavy Metal Magazine Launches 4 New Comics In August – Aftermath: Big Clean, Atoll, Reincarnate And Skip To The End
You get an idea of what a Heavy Metal comic book might look at. A touch of the European, a touch of the painted page, a touch of the hyperviolence and sexualisation….
Well, these four new titles shipping from the publisher in August should probably fit inside that wheelhouse rather nicely.
First we have Aftermath: Big Clean #1 by the Molen Brothers, Kevin Molen and Matt Molen.
This ongoing series chronicles a post-apocalyptic future dominated by the cartoon empire Walden where a handful of individuals have been selected for imperial citizenship. Though veiled in celebratory excitement, this rollercoaster-centric ceremony is deadly serious – a secret final evaluation! And what all newcomers quickly learn is that behind his welcoming grin, Dewey Dog, master of the Walden empire, is quite rabid.
Atoll #1 by Tim Daniel and Ricardo Drumond isn't far off either.
When the burlap sack is ripped from her head, decorated Olympic athlete Story Helms finds herself seated on a steel platform overlooking an arena somewhere far off the northwestern coast of Australia. Welcome to The Atoll, where abductees are pitted in combat against the world's deadliest apex predator, Majesty, a twenty-one foot Great White shark. Story is next in the ring-how long will she last? Place your bets.
Reincarnate #1 by Michael Moreci and Keith Burns knocks back the fantasy (slightly) and pumps up the pulp fiction…
Nate McCoy isn't your ordinary private detective. Sure, he's a bit of a slacker who doesn't follow orders and loves to rattle the status quo's cages, but that's not what really sets him apart. After rattling the wrong cage, Nate took a bullet to his head that, somehow, didn't kill him. Instead, it gave him an unusual ability: He can see and interact with past versions of himself. The people he reincarnated from. With the help of Jameson (a Wild West lawman) and Alan (a Mad Men-era hitman), Nate sets his sights on taking down his city's crime kingpin and find out who he has to "thank" for the bullet that gave him this strange, and helpful, new power.
And Skip To The End #1, by Jeremy Holt and Alex Diotto after watching an episode of Spaced, sees…
Jonny Wells desperately wants to relive his grunge rock royalty past. As bassist of Samsara, he craved the Rock'n'Roll lifestyle that eventually claimed the life of the band's visionary lead singer and his best friend. Now a VH1 cautionary tale of drug addiction and self-loathing, Wells trades his smack for an old battered guitar, and discovers that returning to his former glory days are only a few chords away. Literally.
