Con Wars – Acme Comics Vs Ultimate Comics
Ultimate Comics runs the North Carolina Comicon, which ran last weekend at the Durham Convention Center
Two weeks previous to that, rival store Acme Comics ran its first Comic Book City Con at the neighbouring Greensboro, a few miles down the 85 interstate.
This year, NC Comicon doubled its size after having to turn people away last year, added a Film Festival, doubled the panels, upped the guest list with bigger names and added a concent on the Friday to begin the festivities. Tommy Lee Edwards is now the official creative director of the show.
That's the context of Chris Giarrusso, who had designed both shop's mascots, drew one showing the Ulti-Mite decapitating the Acme Bat, given away as by Ultimate Comics colouring sheets during Hallowe'en activities.
Oops. Oh and they also used the image in a flyer during the show
(REMOVED AT REQUEST)
More context? Vendors and guests appearing at the NC Comicon were asked to sign non-complete contracts so that they wouldn't appear at the earlier CBCC.
Those who were banned from attending NCCC included Shelton Drum, the owner of Heroes Aren't Hard To Find in Charlotte, NC. He's also the promoter of Heroes Convention in Charlotte, at which Ultimate Comics is a regular vendor. Will there be tit for tat on that one? Even a prominent cosplayer, Eddie Newsome, was kept from attending.
And now? It's broken out into the wild, with NC Comicon claiming they didn't want people to turn up at their show and see the people they only saw two weeks ago, while CBBC say this was the only slot they could get which wouldn't also clash with the New York Comic Con. There's only one thing left to say…
