How Much Did Mark Millar Sell Millarworld to Netflix For?

Mark Millar sold his Millarworld publishing imprint to Netflix in the summer of 2016. Since then he has been a (very well paid) employee of Netflix, working on TV shows and new comic books, published by Image Comics but owned by Netflix. As a result, he has also been restricted from working on Kingsman, Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl comic books as Netflix does not own those properties – yet.

But how much did he get? At the time, August 2017, the Wall Street Journal reported that experts have said the deal would be worth between $50m and $100 million dollars, a figure that was reflected across the media with most people settling on around $75 million. THR went for $30 million to $50 million. Bleeding Cool ran what we had heard, around $35 million.

But, doing a little research on another story, I came across the reported accounts for Millarworld, filed with the British government. Which, for accounts ending in June 2018, recently filed, shows that Millarworld had a turnover of just over a million dollars, slightly down on the previous year, but also a reported exceptional income amount of $31,464,322. Which in August 2017 would have worked out as around £24,300,000, fairly close as to where it would be today. Before the Brexit Referendum, that he voted Leave in, it would have only netted him £21,000,000.

Which means that Mark Millar made over three million pounds extra out of Brexit…
