"Saved by the Bell": Josie Totah Goes to Head of the Class in Peacock Sequel Series

NBC Universal's upcoming streaming service Peacock has taped Champion's star Josie Totah to lead its Saved by the Bell sequel series. Totah will play Lexi, a beautiful and sharp-tongued cheerleader. As the most popular girl at Bayside High, she is both admired and feared by her peers.

Great News creator Tracey Wigfield created the sequel series based on the original Sam Bobrick-NBC Saturday morning adolescent sitcom that ran for four seasons (1989-1992). Morris was played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar during the series entire run, TV movies, and spinoffs. When Peacock announced the series in September 2019, Gosselaar said no one approached him. The same goes for Tiffani Thiessen, who played his high school sweetheart and lead cheerleader Kelly Kapowski. Gosselaar starred in The Passage for FOX and currently in Mixed-ish for ABC. Thiessen stars in Alexa & Katie for Netflix.

The only other major casting for the Saved by the Bell sequel is John Michael Higgins, who will play Principal Toddman. No word if NBCU is in talks with Gosselaar or a recast for Morris. There's also no word if other original cast members in Thiessen, Lark Voorhies, Dustin Diamond, and Dennis Haskins will participate. Here's the original intro.

This is Totah's second NBCU series' after her breakout in the short-lived Mindy Kaling-produced comedy Champions. The 19-year old actor came out as transgender in an essay in Time. She's coming off her recurring role in the Netflix series No Good Nick. She stars in the upcoming film Magic Camp for Disney+, Amy Poehler's Moxie for Netflix, and Good People for Amazon.
