A Fully Restored Sam Glanzman Story From Next Year's USS Stevens Collection

510tvefsxiLAt the Max Brooks panel at San Diego Comic Con, he was asked what other comics he would recommend. He had one choice. The reissue of A Sailor's Story by Sam Glanzman from Dover Books. Brooks talked about how inspiring it was when he first read it as a boy and saw a direct line from that book to his other work, especially Harlem Hellfighters.

Well, here is a look at Dover Books' follow-up collection, USS Stevens, by Sam Glanzman, collecting almost 70 stores, the original 4 and 5 pagers in the 70s DC war comics edited by Joe Kubert, the three 10 pagers in Marvel's Savage Tales Volume 2 edited by Larry Hama, and the most recent USS Stevens stories Glanzman did for Joe Kubert Presents.

Because the stories are being reprinted from comics made in the 70s, they need some restoration work.  Therefore, Dover Books hired Michael Kelleher, the gentleman responsible for restoring Glanzman's full color art on The Unauthorized Tarzan that Dark Horse published in 2013, to restore all the USS Stevens stories.

So here, as a treat for Glanzman fans and of war comics in general, here's a fully restored 5 page USS Stevens story, entitled "King of the Hill" and originally published in DC's Star Spangled War Stories #174, October 1973, restored by Kelleher. The book will see publication in March 2016.
