Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – 2nd September 2018 – A One, Two For Venom

This is the Top 10 Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait till the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion. This is the only chart that measures actual sales in comic book stores.

And it's a testament to the popularity of Venom right now (and a DC fifth week skip) that the top two titles are both Venom books. Also DC has three Loony Tines titles in the top ten for the first time ever… this is a world where Daffy Duck, Tweety and Porky Pig outsell most everything.

Not a bad week for a fifth Wednesday in the month. Joker and Daffy 1 took the top spot. DC's Looney Toon one shots did well. Two Star Wars titles and Marvel Two In One made our top ten for Marvel. Might Morphin Power Rangers Shattered Grid 1 managed to power in the top ten. Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual 2 manage to sneak in.

What a strange week: Marvel takes four of the top ten in our store this week–and the four positions they take are the top four slots. DC takes four slots further down the top ten list, while Image and AfterShock each take one. Numbers can be a bit deceptive, though: Marvel's top four books sold almost 150% as many copies as the next six books combined. Not the strongest sales week, by any means–and the lackluster response to the DC/Looney Tunes book overall indicates that, for our customers at least, the novelty wore off after the first round of books.

Fifth weeks usually mean good weeks for Marvel at FFF. Ve'Nam took the top spot on our weekly Top Ten list with Venom First Host and Extermination not far behind. Rick & Morty D&D and Power Rangers Shattered Grid also sold incredibly well. Catwoman/ Tweety & Sylvester and Joker/Daffy Duck were the only DC books to crack the Top Ten and even then it was at the bottom. We were shorted all of our Cover As for Joker/Daffy so I'm sure that would've sold more if we'd had them. Amazing Spider-Man #4 sold well on it's second week, selling just a few copies less than Joker/Daffy. It might've been because the Ottley controversy, but we've also just been selling more Amazing in general. I feel like Batgirl could've sold more copies if this variant had actually looked like Josh Middleton had done it. Overall though, for a fifth week

Did 10 titles even come out? All seriousness, while Looney Tunes crossing over with DC did well it wasn't gangbusters like the first time they had these books. Back to School and the looming Labor Day holiday seem to have resulted in one of the slowest weeks of this year. Marvel and DC's light shipping schedule didn't help. Venom didn't do amazing by any stretch but I think it will have legs over the next few weeks. If I'm wrong then the question to ask is "can the market sustain 3 Venom titles" or will people just not care?

Fifth weeks usually have a hodgepodge of random stuff nobody is too excited about… but not this time! Venom and X-Men both chart twice this week, and Mark Russell's excellent Lex Luthor Porky Pig Special was deservedly the highest charting DC book– that writer is poised to be the next big thing, they've just got to put him on the right project. Otherwise, without any Batman books or Spideys some lower charting titles got a chance to shine in the top 5! All in all, a good week!

Overall, a pretty light week for us, but because of that, some titles that don't usually make our top 10 got to shine. The new X-MEN GRAND DESIGN was our bestseller, but ISOLA was right behind it. And not too much further down the list, the third installment of Rafer Roberts and Kristen Gudsnuk's delightful miniseries MODERN FANTASY made an appearance.

Fifth weeks, containing as they often do the flotsam and jetsam of the month's releases, can often result in unusual best seller lists and we've certainly got a bit of that this week. The most glaringly noticeable variation is that all but one title on the list is Marvel. That the one DC title is DETECTIVE COMICS is unsurprising (also, while DETECTIVE is noticeably much lower on the list that usual, it is also *last week's* issue).

With most of the core titles already spoken for in the previous four week, what we have here at the end of the month is mostly a collection of niche event books and mini-series. A good chunk of it is Spidey-related or adjacent, with such titles as EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2, and first issues for both VENOM FIRST HOST and WEB OF VENOM.

Marvel's mutants are also well-represented, with X-23 #3, EXTERMINATION #2, and HUNT FOR WOLVERINE DEAD ENDS #1 all among our best sellers for the week. Also of note: the second issue of the second part (couldn't this have just been numbered 1 through 6?) of Ed Piskor's excellent X-Men retrospective X-MEN GRAND DESIGN SECOND GENESIS #2 remains fairly popular.

Notable sales: Incredible Hulk #182 VF $275 – The end of the trilogy!
