Superman faces an evil doppelganger Superman in Action Comics #1058 tomorrow. Again. What does it think it is, a Marvel movie? Fighting yourself is just superheroic onanism, right? But this is one Superman with experience, and one without…
For a start, it's a Superman who knows that his first appearance in Action Comics #1 was in 1938, on the 1st of August… which is handy when summoning death rays from the sky. There's a lot of that around right now.
And while such catching is no match for this doppelganger Superman, it does allow DC Comics to show aspects of Superman's powers that don't always show up. Like Superman having to focus and ration his heat vision, both to be an effective – and safe – weapon.
But also so that you don't have a flat battery within a few seconds, or blind you. This is also how Cyclops's force beam optic blasts used to work as well… I don't suppose Johnson is in training to take over the Xbooks next? For Superman, this hasn't come up before, but now it has, can it be too long before this happens to the real actual Superman as well as this imposter? It is as if that supernova burst power that Geoff Johns and John Romita introduced was even more closely related to his heat vision than previously suspected… and it's one more gift for Phillip Kennedy Johnson to give to Superman on his way out of Action Comics.
Action Comics #1058 is published by DC Comics tomorrow.
