It's John Constantine's Turn To Be Called A Tosser In Batman Beyond
Bleeding Cool always likes to keep up with DC Comics' policies regarding swear words. So let's check in with today's Batman Beyond #6.
Article Summary
- John Constantine's swearing evolves with DC Comics' shifting policies.
- "Tosser" becomes the new go-to British swear in DC's vocabulary.
- Kyle The Catboi uses the term against Constantine in Batman Beyond.
- Insults in Britain can be crafted with "absolute" before any noun.
Bleeding Cool always likes to keep up with DC Comics' policies regarding swear words. And, as ever, John Constantine is often the instigator. Famously in Books Of Magic by Neil Gaiman, a 'f-cking hell' from Constantine became the frankly, far ruder 'felching heck' on publication as no one knew what 'felching' meant back then. And Google SEO doesn't seem to care about it now, so no hyphen needed. And while Constantine would get far ruder in the mature readers titles, his language would go back and forth on the "teen" books, especially when he rejoined the DC Universe proper like this.

Too many people knew about "wanker" as well. So instead, "tosser" became the DC British Swear Word of choice, after all you could just say he was talking about someone who threw something in an ineffective manner…
But it's always generally been John Constantine who has been allowed to use it. Well, in the new and final Batman Beyond: Neo-Gothic #6, it gets to be used to him by Kyle The Catboi even when he is in some kind of futuristic wraith state.
It is also a well-observed fact that you can put the word "absolute" in front of any random noun in Britain and turn it into an insult. And it holds into the future as much as ut does now, it seems…
