Kara Bodegón Auctions Squalo & Mage to HarperCollins for 2023

Kara Bodegón is a music journalist, games journalist and comic book creator. She's written for publications such as PULP Magazine, Juice PH, Billboard, and Bandwagon Asia. There's a wonderfully candid blog on her site that makes me want to read more of her work, though she hasn't updated it in awhile. And for three-and-a-half years hence, she has auctioned the rights to her first two graphic novels, the middle-grade-aimed Squalo & Mage, to Clarissa Wong at HarperCollins. Squalo & Mage is inspired by Filipino folklore, and follows the story of best friends—a two-legged shark and a young sorceress—as they travel Mundo to free the mystical Bakunawa from its rage before darkness and corruption take over and all magic is wiped out.

Her agent Sara Crowe at Pippin Properties did the two-book deal for North American rights. – and you can find a strong flavour of what to expect across Kara Bodegón's social media… and read a short trip in mid-complete right here. The first book is set to debut in winter 2023.
