Marvel Spider-Books Use '616' Three Times in a Row – Has Tom Brevoort Given In?
Before the Secret Wars event, Marvel creators seem to have been told to use the 616 signifier for the Marvel Universe as much as they wanted, because after Secret Wars it was all going away. And it did. Mostly. As Marvel executive Tom Brevoort was happy to underline.
Well, that was two years ago. And there have been a couple of slip-ups since. But with CB Cebulski as the new Editor-In-Chief, something seems to have moved in the firmaments.
Spider-Geddon #0 referred to being on Earth 616. So did Superior Spider-Man #1 and now Spider-Geddon #1 has made it three in a row…
That's no slip-up. By now that has to be official Marvel Comics policy.
This designation was meant to have been done away with in Secret Wars, as part of a company-wide edict with Joe Quesada and Tom Brevoort both speaking out against its use.
Created by David Thorpe for Captain Britain as a way to refer to Marvel universe continuity as self-deprecatorily further down the line from DC Comics' Earth 1 and Earth 2, taken on by Alan Moore and Alan Davis, picked up and popularised by Chris Claremont and then weaponised by Jonathan Hickman and Dan Slott in Spider-Verse and Time Runs Out… it looks like you can't keep a 616 down.
