Booze Geek – The Game Of Thrones Special

By Dylan Gonzalez

Game of Thrones Special

Beer: Three-Eyed Raven Dark Saison

Brewery: Brewery Ommegang

ABV: 7.2%

"From the darkness I watch you, all of you, all of your lives, with a thousand eyes, and one."

With the premier of season five, Ommegang has released their latest in their lineup of Game of Thrones inspired beer. This time around, the brewery has drawn inspiration from the raven that haunts Bran Stark's dreams.

17463538-mmmainThree-Eyed Raven was a dark saison, bringing together elements from a traditional saison and darker ale. The body of the beer was black and produced a vigorous, frothy head. It gave off the scents of dark fruit, yeast and some malt.

When I drank it, I found the beer to have a mostly dark fruit and yeasty taste. To be honest, it was almost musty in nature. There was also some presence of clove and banana. The finish was slightly hoppy and there was some roasted malt as well, but for some reason, possibly from the mustiness in the body, I did not enjoy the finish. On the palate, there was noticeable carbonation and it was medium bodied.

game-of-thrones-season-5Overall, I was not a huge fan of the Three-Eyed Raven. I figured that the dark saison style would give it some interesting character, but ultimately I was not digging on the flavor all that much. Of the Game of Thrones beers released so far, this has been the one I enjoyed the least. If you are collecting all the bottles, though, I would still suggest trying to track one down.
