The Persepolis Riots Of Tunisia
While the Wall Street Occupy protests that have spread around the world are using the symbols of V For Vendetta to both inspire and to protect, anoither comic book was inspiring a very different kind of protest.
The animated movie version of Marjane Satrapi's comic book Persepolis was shown on Tunisian television last Friday. And riots ensued, from Islamic fundamentalists protesting against the showing of the movie, after a Tunis imam preached against it, as an attack on Islam.
Not only does the cartoon depict a child growing up opposed to the Islamic state of Iran, but it also depicts God, a big no no. Blimey they must have really hated Bruce Almighty.
Police used tear gas to deal with the crowd as they headed to the TV station to burn it down, and similar protests rose up across the country, dealtr with in a smiliar way. The head of the station has now apologised for its timing, with a major election due, and feelings raised.
Tunisia is a secular state but the growth of conservative muslims as a political force is causing concern, and there have been a plethora of demonstrations ahead of an election which a moderate Islamic party is expected to win.
Anyone fancy making Persepolis masks?
