When Kazuo Koike Broke Into Prayer On The CBR Boat
Jonah Weiland is the owner and big cheese of Comic Book Resources. He used to be my boss when I wrote the Lying In The Gutters column for that site. And for the past few years at San Digeo Comic Con, CBR has turned up with a massive boat next to the convention center, so that the great and the good can come and visit him. For Jonah, he doesn't go to San Diego Comic Con, San Diego Comic Con comes to him.
And, it seemed, that included legendary creator of Lone Wolf & Cub, Kazuo Koike, with his translator sitting on the harbour for what may be the oddest interview I've experienced for some time. And I interviewed Shia LaBeouf. That it was recorded at the show this past summer but only went live on the site on New Year's Eve, which may explain why it has had very few comments.
That is a travesty.
Because two thirds of the way through the interview, after telling us that he enjoys US TV shows Criminal Mind, 24 and Supernatural, Kazuo Koike seems to avoid being interviewed and enters into a Buddhist Sutra prayer, leaving Jonah, rather bemused, holding the microphone.
If it was me, I'd have run it the second I had it in the can. But six months later is better than not all.
