Will Attack On Titan Be The New Walking Dead? Many Stores Not Yet Prepared…

Two facts are relevant here.

In its first week on sale in Japan, the thirteenth volume of Hajime Isayama's Attack On Titan manga, sold 1.4 million copies, including 270,000 for the deluxe limited edition version, from a print run of 2 3/4 million.

And in the USA, the Attack On Titan anime inspired by the comic is set to air on Cartoon Network on May 3rd.

When the man-eating giants called Titans first appeared, humans retreated behind massive walls. After a hundred years of safety, a colossal-sized Titan smashes through the defenses, unleashing a flood of giants and carnage in the streets. Eren Jaeger watches helplessly as one of the creatures devours his mother. He vows to kill every Titan walking the earth. Eren and his surviving friends enlist to fight against the insatiable monsters. The future looks bleak, but there's more to Eren than meets the eye: he may be humanity's last hope against extinction. From the director of Death Note and High School of the Dead comes the series Anime News Network calls an intense, visceral, and graphic thrill ride. The Titans have come to feast. Anything can happen. No one is safe.

Most US comic book stores are ill prepared for the same thing happening in America as it did in Japan. Arguably a more westernised comic than the likes of Naruto and One Piece, Attack On Titan has the potential to be another Walking Dead, in comics terms at least.

But most comic stores and book stores don't even have one copy of one volume, published in the US by Random House.

Right now, Attack On Titan Vol 1 is number 19 on Amazon's Top Twenty selling graphic novels. In a couple of weeks, it will probably be number one. And may well stay there for some time…
