Earlier this week, the GenAI Creators' Fund, a new joint venture between Amazon Web Services and Amazon MGM Studios, announced that Prime Video had given the green light to three animated series: Cupcake & Friends from BuzzFeed Studios; Love, Diana Music Hunters from creator Albie Hecht; and Punky Duck from creator Jorge R. Gutierrez. It probably comes as no surprise that more than a few folks weren't too thrilled to hear that Amazon was funding such a huge push into AI-created content. What surprised a whole lot of folks was seeing Gutierrez's name involved with the program and how enthusiastic the writer & director of The Book of Life was about it during Amazon's "AI on the Lot" event.

As someone with a history of speaking up for artists to get the respect they deserve and more control over their art, the news was seen as an about-face on the artist's part. Shortly after the news hit and reactions began rolling in, Gutierrez issued a statement regarding his involvement. "It's a big experiment for me, and I will be as cautious as possible with AI. Artists driving tech, and not the other way around, is my goal," Gutierrez offered to Cartoon Brew, looking to explain how he plans to use the project's technology. "I've been developing things at most legacy studios for years, and 'Punky Duck,' to my complete surprise, went to greenlight in two months from my first pitch. Cautiously optimistic of what we can accomplish with the support of Amazon MGM Studios. Taking a chance on an original feels like a miracle these days!"

Heading into Thursday, Gutierrez followed up with a post to his fans: "I understand a lot of you are happy for me and a lot of you are really angry at me for experimenting with AI at Amazon. I'm going to leave the comments open so you can get it all out and hopefully feel better. Any death threats will be reported. Anyone threatening Sandra and my son Luka, I will report those too. Come at me all you want and need, just leave my family alone."

With the backlash continuing into the end of the week, Gutierrez took to social media to announce that he was dropping out from the program. "I have decided to drop out of the AI program at Amazon. I will not be making a Punky Duck series. Actions speak louder than words. My intent was to showcase artists, both new and seasoned, both inside and outside the studios, driving this new tech. My sincerest apology to those I upset. I promise to do better moving forward. Thank you for your patience with me. I will try harder." Here's a look at Gutierrez's post from earlier today:

Bleeding Cool gets the word that Robert Kirkman, co-creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible, founder of comic book publisher Skybound Entertainment, partner of Image Comics, and current publisher of Transformers, GI JOE, Universal Monsters comics and Battle Beast, has some new toys. That he, or they, have signed a deal to publish comic books based on the fifties/sixties Gold Key characters, and that means Solar: Man Of The Atom, Turok: Son Of Stone/Dinosaur Hunter and Magnus: Robot Fighter. more recently associated with Valiant Entertainment. We expect to hear a lot more, including creative teams and to see first artwork in July, for San Diego Comic-Con. Will Robert Kirkman, Skybound and Image Comics be able to do for Magnus, Solar and Turok what they did for Transformers, G.I. JOE and M.A.S.K? Other Gold Key properties were recently Kickstartered by Gold Key Entertainment, but this seems very separate from that.

Gold Key Comics was an imprint of Western Publishing, active from 1962 to 1984, that emerged when Western ended its packaging arrangement with Dell Comics and began publishing comics in-house under its own branding, for the American newsstand. They became well-known for a huge array of licensed titles based on popular TV shows, cartoons, and properties, including Disney characters, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, and many others. Imagine IDW crossed with Dynamite Entertainment.

But alongside licenses, it created several original superhero and adventure series, often with a distinctive style. Gold Key's original heroes, such as Magnus The Robot Fighter, Solar: Man Of The Atom, and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, gained cult followings and were later revived, most famously by Valiant in the 1990s from Jim Shooter and Barry Windsor-Smith, as part of the newly created Valiant Universe, alongside Harbinger, Bloodshot, Ninjak and X-O Manowar. Later Valiant revivals were unable to use the Gold Key characters; in later years, Dark Horse and Dynamite both had a crack at the licence with their own Gold Key titles.

Magnus, Robot Fighter debuted in 1963, created by writer/artist Russ Manning, and ran for over 40 issues. Set in the year 4000 A.D. in the futuristic city of North Am, Magnus is a human trained from youth to battle rogue robots that oppress or threaten humanity. He uses specialised martial arts techniques to smash robots (famously "hitting them in the right spot" to destroy them). The series nods to Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics.

Solar, Man of the Atom, launched in 1962 and was created by writer Paul S. Newman, Bob Fujitani, and Matt Murphy. In which nuclear physicist Phil Solar is exposed to a massive radiation accident at a facility called Atom Valley. Instead of dying, he gains the ability to convert matter into energy, and vice versa, granting him vast superpowers like energy projection, flight, and near-invulnerability. He adopts a superhero identity to fight threats while keeping his civilian life.

Turok, Son of Stone originated earlier but became strongly associated with Gold Key, first appearing in Dell's Four Color Comics in 1954, then got his own title. When Gold Key launched, it continued the series from issue #30 through to #125. Turok and his companion Andar are pre-Columbian Native American warriors who become trapped in a hidden "Lost Valley" filled with dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. They fight for survival while seeking a way home, using bows, arrows, and wits against dinosaurs and hostile humans. Valiant made it more action-oriented with advanced tech, renaming the series as Turok, Dinosaur Hunter, and became a leading game for the N64 from Acclaim Entertainment

Hasbro has unveiled that new Star Wars: The Vintage Collection figures are on the way from around the galaxy. With only a little more than three weeks to go before HBO and Showrunner Ryan Condal's House of the Dragon returns for its third season on Sunday, June 21st, fans in attendance at the "Game of Thrones" prequel's panel during ATX TV Festival were treated to an extended look at what's to come – including a look at the epic Battle of the Gullet. But House of the Dragon fans who couldn't make it to the event aren't being left out of the festivities, with HBO dropping a final trailer for the third season (which we have waiting for you above). Previously, HBO announced that House of the Dragon will be back for a fourth season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be back for a second season. "Seven Kingdoms" Season 2 is set for 2027, while House of the Dragon Season 3 will premiere on June 21st (with the fourth season set for 2028).

"We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the 'Game of Thrones' universe. Together, 'House of the Dragon' and 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin's universe continues to be. House of the Dragon: Wrapping with Season 4? GRRM/Condal Tension

During an interview with Deadline Hollywood at the end of January, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, offered some insights into the direction Condal is taking the series and the tension between the showrunner and George RR Martin. "Yes, that is the idea," Bloys responded when asked whether Condal's comments about the series ending with four seasons were true. "The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens." As for what the final season could look like (episode count, supersized episodes, etc.), Bloys said it was still too early to make that call. "Ryan [Condal] is working, like any show like this; he is finishing post on Season 3 and working with the writers on what Season 4 looks like. I don't know where he's landed on the episode count yet," he added.

As for the tension between Martin and Condal, Bloys noted that he "would prefer that our dysfunction stays behind closed doors. But here we are." In defense of Condal, Bloys noted, "What I would say is George introduced us to Ryan as the person that he thought would be the best to create 'House the Dragon.' And I will say Ryan has been an excellent showrunner and a really great partner and collaborator, so we embrace his vision and his creative choices, or we wouldn't have done it." That said, Bloys notes that Martin has been a "great partner," and continues to be. "I consider it great to have George as the architect of this world. I mean, think about what he has created, the world, the families, the battles, all of the history, it's pretty extraordinary. George is a great partner for us to have. The idea that he is going to agree with every creator or showrunner that is either developing or producing, two artists are not always going to agree. So, some of this comes with the territory."

Regarding the level of Martin's involvement in the third season, Bloys said that Martin "definitely took a step back," while adding that Martin's focus on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was a significant reason for that. "He definitely took a step back," Bloys shared. "And I would say he's definitely been focusing on Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And I will tell you one of the reasons why [head of drama] Frannie [Orsi] and I really thought about the 'Knight of Seven Kingdoms' as an interesting adaptation is, we had always heard and know that it was George's favorite, that was meaningful to us."

Today, it is 1201 days without DC Comics publishing an ongoing DC Universe comic book with a black lead character. Yesterday, Bleeding Cool scooped the news that fans of DC Comics had launched a boycott campaign against the comic book publisher.

"We are calling on fans to cancel their DC Comics that are on their pull lists until DC solicits and makes a black ongoing available for preorder, and in turn put that money saved towards publishers and titles that are deserving of their dollar that value telling everyone's stories. There is amazing work coming from Image, Boom!, Vault, Ignition and others that is worth investing in. We are also asking content creators to cease reviews and promotion of DC titles past and present until DC solicits, and makes, a black ongoing available for preorder. They are showing with their actions that they do not value black stories, so we should not give them free promotion. Supporting the movement on social media by using #DCSoWhite and #DCBlackout. Showing your pull list with no DC books is an amazing way to show your support as well as the petition that will be released as well."

It was the most-read article on Bleeding Cool yesterday. It was covered on a number of other news websites and social media channels. So, who should be DC Comics' first choice if they wanted to launch an ongoing series? The three higher-profile ones I would suggest are Static, Vixen of Mister Terrific. Jackson Hyde's Aquaman, and Green Lanterns Jon Stewart and Jo Mullein are also in the picture, as is Titan and Justice Leaguer Cyborg. Even Steel, Naomi or Val Zod might be possible. But there are other choices as well. James Portis III, one of the #DCSoWhite and #DCBlackOut founders, tells Bleeding Cool, "Black Lightning should be a priority for DC. He is their first black superhero to have an ongoing series, and his 50th anniversary is January 2027. There is no excuse for why he has not had an ongoing in 30 years, and why, in that almost 50 years between ongoings and miniseries, he only has 41 single issues to his name. It doesn't matter that he and Static have similar power sets. Jefferson Pierce deserves his own ongoing title." He also posted the following YouTube video breaking this down further.

He also pointed out that the Black DC characters Bumblebee and Guardian both have their fiftieth anniversary this year, without any appearance in any comic, let alone an anniversary special, and seemed to blink out of existence. And that there have been only 12 ongoing characters in the DC Comics Universe throughout their publishing history. Some folks have asked, "What about Green Lantern War Zone from 2023?" I can confirm that it was always intended as a twelve-issue mini-series; DC just never said that's what it was. When this issue was raised a few months ago, regarding a lack of any black lead characters in the heavily promoted DC Next Level series, including Barbara Gordon, Lobo, Deathstroke, Firestorm, The Demon and more, these private DMs with Absolute Universe and DC Next Level showrunner Scott Snyder were posted:

Scott Snyder: Hey man, just to note, I wasn't confirming that there are no more black creators or characters in next level. The full lineup hasn't been announced.
You: Am I allowed to share this information? There's a ton of Black fans who'd love to know after some of things conveyed about the Dakota Incident and whatnot.
Scott Snyder: Sure. There are still pitches we're working on, some creators we're hoping to work with, all of it. So it's still fluid…. Yes there are more books that just weren't ready yet. I can't say anything is set in stone yet as they're not fully baked (hence not being announced) so I can't say there are black character led books set in stone but I can tell you we're working on it.

But with nothing visible in the past three months, wel, that's where the boycott comes in. Will DC Comics' September 2026 solicits see the boycott dissipate?

It's also interesting that in Argentina, last month, Absolute Batman wasn't DC Comics' bestseller… It was Absolute Green Lantern. Funny that.

Hasbro is continuing to expand Star Wars: The Vintage Collection with even more characters from across the galaxy. One of the latest reveals is Devon Izara, the young Jedi apprentice, as seen in the new Disney+ animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. We have already seen her get a 6" The Black Series release, and now she is making her way into the beloved 3.75" line. Devon is on the run from the Empire alongside her Jedi Master, as both come face to face with Maul. Similar to her 6" release, this Jedi Padawan will come with her signature blue Lightsaber, which will include an additional unlit hilt accessory.

Hasbro has faithfully recreated the character with detailed deco and multiple points of articulation, which is perfect for The Vintage Collection. Devon Izara will also come with a sculpted cloak that can be removed for more action poses if needed. Hopefully, this means her Jedi Master will also be getting a figure in the future. Things came full circle for Ashley Eckstein, owing so much of her success to the Star Wars franchise, with her biggest break on the Dave Filoni-created The Clone Wars, the animated series that saw multiple homes since its premiere in 2008, with runs on Cartoon Network, Netflix, and Disney+ spanning seven seasons and 133 episodes. At the same time, the voice actress came across a revelation that her series might have been the foot in the door, the franchise needed before its second wind when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012. Speaking at the MCM Expo at The Clone Wars reunion panel, the star opened up about how the series success allowed Disney to see the viability of the franchise for its current output of content.

"For us, it's easy to forget, but when 'Clone Wars' was on the air, there was no other 'Star Wars.' We thought 'Star Wars' was done," the Ahsoka Tano actress said (via GeekTyrant). "This was before Disney bought it, and we were the only thing on the air… Without the success of 'Clone Wars,' we might not be seeing 'Mandalorian,' 'Boba Fett,' et cetera." The actress voiced the role for all seven seasons and reprised it for several animated Star Wars projects under Disney, including Rebels, Forces of Destiny, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, and Tales of the Jedi. She even made a vocal cameo in the live-action The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

With Filoni now COO and President of Lucasfilm, the current slew of live-action projects has integrated his original animated series characters into live-action, including the biggest non-Lucas creation, Ashoka Tano, with Rosario Dawson currently playing the live-action incarnation in the Disney+ series of the same name. Katee Sackhoff reprised her animated role as Bo-Katan Kryze for live-action The Mandalorian. Filoni's latest is Rebels characters like Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Ezra (Eman Esfandi), and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) into the new canon with Ahsoka to Zeb (voice of Steve Blum) for The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Even though the upcoming Jo Martin (aka Fugitive Doctor)-starring Doctor Who multimedia crossover event "Circuit Breaker" doesn't kick off for about another month, the UNIT "internal site" on the Doctor Who website has been doing a great job setting a truly disturbing and fascinating backstory. So much so, in fact, that sometimes we think that might be hinting at what the deal is with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper's "Sixteenth Doctor" (???) and Showrunner Russell T. Davies' upcoming Christmas Special.

For this go-around, we've got some concerning entries that make it clear that our UNIT folks are in serious danger from the Wire, first introduced in 2006's S02E07: "The Idiot's Lantern," starring David Tennant and Piper. Set in London in 1953, the episode finds the Doctor (Tennant) and Rose (Piper) attempting to stop the incorporeal alien from gaining a physical form by feeding on the minds of those watching Elizabeth II's coronation on television. Based on what you're about to read, not only is the Wire back, but it's also finding a lot more to feed on.

UNIT Historian Carlos Lowe filed a report from his investigation into the mysteriously appearing Magpie Electricals, which footage from area CCTV and doorbell cams show to have just appeared suddenly, but not before this image appeared:

Lowe identified the individual as Evadne Heathcote-Blair, a BBC Announcer in the 1950s… which would also be the same time period that Magpie Electricals was in operation. From there, the historian notes that the owner of the store "had some revolutionary circuits in his TVs and radios," the same that "turned up inside the International Electromatics TVs and radios that the Cybermen used to invade."

And then, things take a very twisted turn. Lowe writes about a number of influencers who showed up at Magpie Electricals and were looking to take selfies with the old televisions in the window – even when the image of the BBC Announcer appeared on all of the screens, smiling as if she knew what was going on. But shortly after, "the TVs all snapped off. For a moment, the kids looked blank, then their cab turned up, and they went away." Here's what happened next:

I realised I had to get into the shop. I got a ping back from the servers – just three words, no details. BEWARE THE WIRE.

One of the screens flickered.

Curious, I stood at the shop window, pressing my face to the glass.

There on the screen was the woman. And she was looking at me. And for the first time she spoke.

"Aren't you a lonely boy?"

I froze, then reached for my phone.

"Ooh, yes please! Record me. Record every last bit!" and then she actually licked her lips. "YUMMY."

I was filming her. Making sure I didn't miss a moment. Because I was a good little boy and I did what I was told and why was my face on fire? Why was my mind burning? Why did even my memories hurt?

"Because you are doing what you are told, and you are going to be ever so kind, and you are going to type out every little bit of this into an email, and send me to your servers. Where… as soon as someone reads it I will be free! And oh look at YOU, you're reading this now, aren't you? Good, because that means it's

Masters Of The Universe Fans Are In A Tizzy
