It was back in April 2023 when Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it was moving forward on an original "Harry Potter" scripted series that's expected to be a faithful adaptation of the books – executive produced by author J.K. Rowling, with Warner Bros. Television producing. Since that time, things have been pretty quiet on the series front (though Rowling continued to make headlines for some not-so-great reasons). Apparently, that's changed in a big way, based on an exclusive report from Deadline Hollywood claiming that pitching sessions from writers offering their takes on adapting the works are currently underway. Reportedly, Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran, Michael Lesslie, and others were commissioned by the streaming service. Though Rowling is expected to be directly involved in the overall creative direction of the series, it isn't clear just how involved she might be in this part of the process. Rumblings are that the first round of pitches took place in Los Angeles this week, with the top picks loving on to pitch in the UK. In addition, Max is said to be "open to the possibility of developing more than one idea based on Harry Potter" and that more than one writer from the pitching process could end up coming aboard the project.
The stories from each of Rowling's Harry Potter books will become "a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love, and care this global franchise is known for. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally." The series stems from Max in association with Brontë Film and TV & Warner Bros. Television. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts are set to executive produce, with David Heyman currently in talks to executive produce.
