"Marvel's Cloak & Dagger": Freeform Ends EP Jeph Loeb Series After 2 Seasons
Marvel's Cloak & Dagger will be ending its run on Freeform after two seasons, with the network choosing to not greenlight a third go for the series. With the options on the cast reportedly expiring this week and news on the production front having gone quiet, the news is not surprising.
As for the reason for the cancellation – well, depends on how you want to look at it. On one hand, the once buzzed-about series saw a ratings drop of nearly 40% during its second season – similar to Freeform's PLL: The Perfectionists, which was previously cancelled.
On the other hand, this could also be seen as the beginning of the end of Jeph Loeb's influence/impact on Marvel Television. With Kevin Feige promoted to chief creative officer of all things Marvel, a restructuring is expected and reports are that Loeb will be leaving his leadership position at Marvel Television by the end of the year (possibly by Thanksgiving).
Out gut feeling? A little bit of both – as for what this means for the fate of the Marvel animated series championed by Loeb via Hulu, that still remains uncertain.
"We are so proud of Marvel's Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told. We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We'd like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together."
"Marvel's Cloak & Dagger" is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.
Marvel's Cloak & Dagger stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Andrea Roth, Gloria Reuben, Miles Mussenden, Carl Lundstedt, James Saito, and J.D. Evermore. The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Joe Pokaski (Underground, Heroes) serves as showrunner and executive producer; Jeph Loeb (Marvel's The Punisher, Marvel's The Defenders), Marvel's head of Television, and Jim Chory (Marvel's The Punisher, Marvel's The Defenders) also serve as executive producers.
