Dark Horse To Publish Carla Speed McNeill's Finder
Finder by Carla Speed McNeill is one of my all time favourite comic book series, telling a far-future depopulated Earth story about "aboriginals" living between the cities. And Carla is one of the greatest modern comic book artists, occupying a space somewhere between Alan Davis and Jeff Smith, Terry Wiley and Philip Bond, Dave Sim and Bryan Talbot that is all her own. But it's always been a little tricky to track down copies of her work. Greg Bandino reports for Bleeding Cool that it might be about to get easier.
Big indy news at C2E2 comes from Indy Island's resident goggle-clad auteur, Carla Speed McNeil, who announced that her self-published series Finder would be moving to Dark Horse. "I've always advocated self-publishing as a training ground to learn how printers and distributers work," said McNeil. "You have to change what you're doing to succeed; if you fail, it's your fault."
McNeil doesn't consider her move to a publisher a sign of failure, more a decision to focus on the creative end of her business. There comes a time when the backend becomes more than you can do and still do work on the side," she said, citing how acting as publisher prevented her from being able to take on other projects with friends and interested parties.
"I'm a good letterer, but not the best advertiser," said McNeil, who made the decision to go with Dark Horse's interest because of how the business conducts itself and the experiences friends had with the company. "I still recommend self-publishing for learning how to think like a publisher."
The first new Finder released from Dark Horse will be the forthcoming Voice, currently serialized on her website, followed by two hardcover collections of the original series.
Fans looking to complete their Light Speed Press runs will need to track McNeil down at a convention, but libraries interested in buying copies of her books can contact her directly for a special price.
As for the aforementioned side projects, she has a few in the works, but nothing that she can yet comment on. Voice will be available in February 2011
