"Dark Tower Meets Seven Samurai": Steve Orlando And Ryan Sook's 'The Unexpected' For DC Comics
Well, that was unexpected.
Announced in the current DC Comics panel at New York Comic Con, is a brand new comic book series by Steve Orlando and Ryan Sook called The Unexpected.
It's about a team of enemies, and Steve has described it as "Dark Tower meets Seven Samurai."
Featuring all-new characters who have made huge mistakes, and only by working together can they right those problems in their life. And the mysterious images Orlando had been tweeting a month back were in regards to this project.
And now we have some more details!
For comparison's sake, The Dark Tower is a series of eight books written by author Stephen King that incorporates themes from multiple genres, including dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror, and Western. It describes a "gunslinger" and his quest toward a tower, the nature of which is both physical and metaphorical. The series, and its use of the Dark Tower, expands upon King's multiverse and in doing so, links together many of his other novels. King has described the series as his magnum opus. In addition to the eight novels of the series proper, many of King's other books relate to the story, introducing concepts and characters that come into play as the series progresses.
And Seven Samurai is a 1954 Japanese samurai adventure/drama film co-written, edited, and directed by Akira Kurosawa. The story takes place in 1586 during the Sengoku Period of Japanese history. It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven ronin (masterless samurai) to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops. It is one of the most copied films, in one way or another, and now it looks like Steve Orlando is returning to the well.
Hope that helps the uninitiated — or the unexpected.
