What's The Opposite of the Superman Complex? Naomi #3 Mindless Specultion and Spoilers
The Superman Complex in our world was named as such by Dr Frederick Wertham, author of the discredited Seduction Of The Innocent, and describes an unhealthy sense of responsibility, or the belief that everyone else lacks the capacity to successfully perform one or more tasks and that such a person may feel a constant need to "save" others.'
But in the DC Universe, which had no Wertham in it, it means something else. From Naomi #1…
Bendis, Walker and Campbell redefine this in the DC Universe as the fantasy of a child that they were adopted and their true identity is something special… Naomi was adopted. And the first issue indicates that she is very special indeed. Even if everyone wants to erase her background – or have had it erased.
There have been theories. Bleeding Cool has reported that Bendis to to write a new Legion Of The Super-Heroes series. Could Naomi have been sent back in time from the 31st century and have been hiding out in Port Oswego, Oregon ever since, unaware of her identity? We've already seen signs of that kind of journey over in Doomsday Clock #10. One of many suggestions.
But reading today's Naomi #3, there are other possibilities emerging.
When we discover that the mechanic is not from round here.
But a Thangarian. With a life reminiscent of Saga…
And ways that may tie this story into what's going to be happening in Young Justice soon….
And there's more news about those in her life…
And there's the tiniest trend of every one in Port Oswego, Oregon being special. An alien. A superhero. Not from around here, And everyone in hiding. Except for Naomi. They say it takes a village to raise a child, what if everyone in the village is a superhero or villain or alien, all in hiding? And what if Naomi is just a regular, ordinary human, the only one in town, and everyone in the village is there to help her? Or experiment on whether they can do such a thing?
Just mindless speculation…. what do you think?
