New BBC Talk Show Puts Creepy CGI Putin Behind the Desk
Depending on how this plays out, a new BBC talk show might end up being the coolest, weirdest thing on television.
Tonight with Vladimir Putin reminds me a lot of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, but the new show puts a CGI Vlad into a live setting, with real studio guests. The show will be semi-scripted, but the CGI host will actually be able to interact with guests in real time.
The show is currently in its pilot phase, but is expected to run as two 12 minute episodes on BBC. Guests will include former Prime Minister Tony Blair's pitch man, Alastair Campbell, as well as June Sarpong and Joe Swash. While those names may not be familiar outside of the UK, it's the format itself that will be the real star.
Tonight with Vladimir Putin will use live effects technology that will incorporate motion capture with a three dimensional virtual cartoon of Putin, who will be able to interact with his environment and guests, all in front of a live studio audience.
The show looks like it will skew heavily into political satire, with Putin ribbing Campbell for Britain's current political climate. At one point, Putin struggles with the idea of feminism while interviewing a prominent feminist.
It's really hard to say at this point how Putin himself will take the production- he comes across as the kind of person who does not like to be made fun of, and takes his image deadly seriously. Will Putin have a sense of humor about Tonight with Vladimir Putin, or should the producers start watching their backs?
Even bigger question- would Putin be up for appearing as a guest?
Tonight with Vladimir Putin is the creation of Jasper Gibson, who runs a UK based political satire site called The Poke.
We'll definitely have more information on Tonight with Vladimir Putin as we get it!
