DC Comics Still Beats Marvel on Marketshare-Per Capita in June 2019 – With Dynamite Placing Fourth

Welcome to Bleeding Cool's Monthly 'Per Capita' List. The usual comics industry marketshare shows how much share of the overall market a comics publisher has. This divides it by the number of new titles they publish in that month.

We've already looked at publisher marketshare in the North American direct market of comic book shops for June 2019.

But if you divide the marketshare by the number of individual titles published that month, you get a different picture. In June, Marvel published 147 comics, graphic novels to DC Comics' 71 and Image Comics' 57. Marvel gained their marketshare by having twice as many titles as DC. This strips away that advantage.

Now, in January, Marvel still beat DC on both counts, in February, DC had a greater retailer marketshare per item distributed than Marvel, though brought in less revenue and in March, DC Comics dominated both, more in sales than revenue. In April, Marvel swung this round again, leading DC over marketshare per capita both in dollars raised and items sold. But in May, DC swung that around, taking a dramatic lead in both. It is worth still mentioning that this also includes Marvel's dollar line of True Believers reprints adding to the numbers of titles published which can skew numbers a bit. And anyway, DC Comics will be copying that soon too.

Boom Goes The Dynamite (And The Valiant)

In June, DC Comics continued to beat Marvel per-capita, even if it is not an entire thrashing. Dynamite showed their utter strength, beating everyone but the top three. But Valiant and Boom also outperform in this fashion as well.

Dynamite rose to fourth place, followed by Valiant, Boom, IDW and then Dark Horse, opposite to the usual charts. into fifth place behind Dark Horse. And Albatross Funnybooks also behaves like a Premier Publisher by this reckoning.
