"Leonardo": "Poldark" Star Aidan Turner Tapped for Frank Spotnitz, Steve Thompson Da Vinci TV Series
Aidan Turner (Poldark, The Hobbit Trilogy) is set to star in a television series focusing on renaissance visionary Leonardo da Vinci in Leonardo. The series comes from Frank Spotnitz (The Man in the High Castle, The X-Files) and Steve Thompson (Sherlock). Sony Pictures Television is set to distribute and will co-produce with Lux Vide, Rai Fiction, and Big Light Productions.
"The genius of Leonardo da Vinci remains deeply inspiring, which is why we've been able to attract such an incredible team, with Aidan, Freddie, Matilda and Giancarlo headlining the cast, and Sony Pictures Television coming onboard to bring us the greatest broadcast partners around the world. I couldn't imagine better collaborators with whom to tell this story."
– Frank Spotnitz, Executive Producer & CEO, Big Light Productions
Leonardo is also set to star Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor) as Stefano Giraldi. He's a fictional officer in Milan investigating a murder case. Da Vinci is a suspect as Giraldi digs into his past for evidence – of either his innocence or his guilt. Matilda de Angelis (The Undoing) and Giancarlo Giannini (Catch 22) play Caterina da Cremona and Andrea del Verrocchio, respectively. Spotnitz recruited Dan Percival from The Man in the High Castle to direct, with shooting officially underway in Rome as of this week.
"While da Vinci made his name in Florence, people everywhere feel he is somehow a part of their story. Together with RAI Fiction, LUX Vide, and Big Light Productions, we hope to tap into this and tell a story that remains true to its Italian origin and resonates the world over."
– Brendan Fitzgerald, SVP-Intl. Co-Productions, Sony Pictures Television
Turner recently completed his five-series run on Poldark. You can also catch him in Love is Blind (currently in theaters) and he's filming Terrence Malick's The Last Planet – an upcoming biopic about Jesus Christ.
All four seasons of The Man in the High Castle are available on Amazon Prime.
