Booze Geek – Dawn Of The Red
By Dylan Gonzalez
Beer: Dawn of the Red
Brewery: Ninkasi Brewing Company
I feel like this beer is a perfect brew to enjoy around this time of the year. It's not quite the Walking Dead beer, but it's a good one regardless.
Ninkasi Brewing Company's Dawn of the Read, an Indian-style red ale, incorporated elements from a pale ale and a traditional red. The beer was a cloudy pale orange, with a lot of active carbonation visible. It produced a thin head and long lasting lacing. It gave off the scents of light fruity hops and malt.
Dawn of the Red had a really taste of creamy malt mixed with fruity hops. I picked up notes of mango and other tropical fruit. It was sweet on the finish. The carbonation was quite noticeable, but was still an easy drinking beer. I found this to be an incredibly well balanced beer, tasty and smooth to drink.
What to Drink This To:
The problem with these zombie themed beers is that I always find myself going back to the classic zombie films from the likes of George Romero, Lucio Fulci and others. And while Dawn of the Red sports killer artwork in homage to the poster for Dawn of the Dead (but with a little rock and roll flair), I feel compelled to suggest something other than its source of inspiration and I'm going with Dan O'Bannon's Return of the Living Dead. Half zombie flick and half black comedy, Return blends laughs and gore in a wonderfully effective manner. The film notably sports the zombie classic character, "The Tar Man" a hideously saggy and melty zombie who utters the famous phrase, "…brrraaaaiiinnnsssss."
Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world. He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
