More Clues That Point To DC Issue Zeroes In September
Bleeding Cool has been running the story that DC Comics will be renumbering their comics to issue zero in September, to tell earlier stories of their characters to celebrate the first year of the New DCU, before returning to issue thirteens in October, but carrying on threads of that zero issue. And for some books, pushing them in a new direction, including new creative teams, maybe even new books.
And while Ivan Reis and friends seemed to confirm it at Boston Comic Con, it look like that was a bit of a slip in their part and DC Comics haven't mentioned anything official.
But the news about DC books shipping in August may be a bit of a giveaway. Let's have a look.
All week, we've been telling you about the exciting array of Annuals that'll be coming your way this August. Today, we are pleased to announce that joining the ranks of the previously announced DETECTIVE COMICS, SUPERMAN, THE FLASH and GREEN LANTERN Annuals will be JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1, written by Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio on their debut collaboration.
"This is the final fate of this incarnation of the Justice League International," DiDio teased to THE SOURCE. "There will be also be a big showdown of events that played out in the final issues of O.M.A.C. The ramifications of this will be felt across the board and will lead directly into a major event spanning across all the Justice League group titles later this year."
Illustrated by Jason Fabok, JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 will tie into the shocking events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12. Guest-starring Blue Beetle, this special 48-page issue will be available in stores on August 29th.
Sounds like a major change of direction – even title – for this comic in September.
Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by Cat Staggs and Rich Perotta, PHANTOM LADY will star the female Freedom Fighter in the debut of her own 4-part miniseries. And joining her will be her partner-in-crimefighting, the diminutive dynamo known as Doll Man.
"Phantom Lady and Doll Man is an exciting return to the roots of the characters as pulpy, street level crime fighters with a few new twists and some heavy sci-fi overtones," Justin Gray told THE SOURCE. "We took the best of their original core concepts and updated them with no relation to our previous work on Phantom Lady and Doll Man in the Freedom Fighters. You're getting in on the ground floor of the origin story of two people whose lives intersect and a common threat that transforms them into pretty amazing and engaging superheroes."
Gray and Palmiotti also created The Ray mini-series earlier. Say, do you reckon in September or October we might see a new Freedom Fighters comic to come?
And DC Universe Presents, which has run multiple story arcs with different characters, gives us a one off issue in September for #12 – almost as if they weren't able to run a second part in October.
"The Teen Titans survived the Culling and are in for some Prehistoric adventures in both SUPERBOY and TEEN TITANS number tens on the aptly named Mystery Island. And when all is said and done, they will be taking home some souvenirs," editor Eddie Berganza revealed to THE SOURCE. "Helping Kid Flash have a yabba-doo time with the visiting Dino teens (in back-ups in both TEEN TITANS #11 and #12 with a prologue and epilogue that connects to DC PRESENTS #12) are writer Fabian Niceza and artist Jorge Jimenez. As this story unfolds, we will see which species is really set for extinction!"
DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #12 will be written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Jorge Jimenez. Look for the issue in stores on August 15th, but in the meantime, check out the below promotional art from the issue's cover artist, Ryan Sook.
