Comic Book Industry Statistics From NYCC
From the Diamond Retailer Breakfast at NYCC, a few interesting statistics from Diamond Comic Book Distributors.
Comics sales through Diamond declined 2.4% in 2010
Graphic novels declined 5% in 2010
Toys declined 35% in 2010 – much of which is apparently down to change in licensor behaviour over this product category.
Games however were up 38%, with boxed games gaining the greatest gains.
For the year to date, Diamond sales overall are down 4.6% and they have lost 2.5% of customers.
An unwelcome drop – but not yet the end of the industry that some people have been predicting. It's also worth bearing in mind that distribution options have opened up to a significant degree in the last couple of years…
Oh, one other stat. Earlier this year, 1 in 3 comic books solicited in Previews was a variant of some sort. Diamond have voiced concern over the confusion and instability this can cause and have raised the issue with publishers. That amount has now reduced to just over 1 in 4 and they hope to see it drop further.
